Notre Dame, Ind. – Ten students at Holy Cross colleges and universities were named Fulbright Scholars in 2012.
Blessed Basil Moreau, founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross, emphasized education of the heart and mind as one of the three pillars of the Congregation. The U.S. Province includes four colleges and universities in the United States that are guided by the principles, philosophy and spirituality of Holy Cross. That translates into the education of outstanding students who are becoming “useful citizens of society,” which was part of Blessed Moreau’s vision.
The University of Portland has been named the top producer of Fulbright scholars in the nation among “master’s universities” for the past two years. Six 2012 graduates were named Fulbright Scholars. The recipient of the graduate studies position in the United Kingdom is Kurt Berning. Jennifer Brannan will conduct research on water treatment methods in India. The recipient of the Spanish teaching grant is Chris Lew, while the recipients of the German teaching grants are: Jason Hortsch, Jessica Marsh and Bianca McCluskey.
In 2011, Portland had 10 Fulbright recipients and since 2001, students have earned 40 Fulbright grants.
At the University of Notre Dame, Mark Kettler and Michael Fedynsky, who graduated last weekend, were named Nanovic Fulbright Scholars to study abroad and conduct research in Europe.
Kettler declined the Fulbright and will instead attend the University of California-Berkeley for graduate studies. Fedynski accepted his grant and will study the effects of a human rights monitoring group active in the Ukraine until 1981.

Two recent graduates of King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., were selected to receive Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship grants. They will spend 10 months teaching English in Europe.

At Stonehill College in Easton, Mass., Maggie Seaver, a 2012 graduate, is a Fulbright alternate for an English teaching assistantship in Panama. Casey Kapalko, also a 2012 grad, was a Fulbright finalist for an English teaching assistantship in Israel.
