“Basil Moreau: Essential Writings” is the definitive introduction to the life and vision of Blessed Basil Moreau, the nineteenth-century French priest who founded the Congregation of Holy Cross.
It is also the first book to gather together Moreau’s essential spiritual, pastoral and educational writings.
As the editors, Holy Cross priests Rev. Kevin Grove, C.S.C., and Rev. Andrew Gawrych, C.S.C., write in their introduction: “For Basil Moreau, life was an imitation of Christ. The cross was his only hope. Moreau strove not only to live but also to teach these truths. From the sermons he preached to the spiritual exercises and circular letters he wrote for the Congregation of Holy Cross, his writings bear witness to this primary concernbecoming a living copy of the crucified Savior.”
Fr. Moreau was beatified in 2007 by the Catholic Church. This anthology provides generous selections from Moreau’s sermons, pastoral letters, educational treatises, and spiritual reflections, which reveal a figure who was no stranger to difficulty and conflict but was also a man deeply committed to a hope that can only emerge from Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection. Available both in paperback and hardback.
The book is available in a limited-edition hardcover edition for $50 and in paperback for $25 on the Ave Maria Press website.
Fr. Grove, a doctoral candidate at the University of Cambridge, was ordained to the priesthood in 2010. Fr. Gawrych, associate pastor of Tri-Community Parish in Colorado Springs, Colo., was ordained in 2008. Fr. Gawrych has been the editor or co-editor of several Holy Cross books.
The two also are coeditors of “The Cross, Our Only Hope” and “You have Redeemed the World.”
