Rev. Cajetan T. Holland, C.S.C. passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2012, at Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, Ind. He was 91 years old.
Fr. Holland was born in Lawrence, Mass. to Thomas and Annie Holland. He was baptized at St. Mary’s Church, Lawrence, Mass. In 1936, Fr. Holland graduated from Lawrence High School and for the following four years he worked at Pacific Print Works. In 1940, he entered the Holy Cross Brothers as a Postulant at St. Joseph’s, Valatie, NY. On August 15, 1941, he entered Holy Cross Novitiate, North Dartmouth, Mass. He made his Final Profession on August 16, 1945, in Sacred Heart Church, North Dartmouth, Mass. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1946. In 1968, he obtained a Master’s of Science from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. Fr. Holland was ordained to the priesthood on June 9, 1979.
In 1950, he taught for five years at Holy Trinity High School, Chicago, Ill. He then moved to Cathedral High School, Indianapolis, Ind. where he taught until going to Notre Dame High School, West Haven, Conn., in 1958. From 1958 1973, he taught at Notre Dame, West Haven, with the exception of two years, 1965-1967, during which he taught at Vincentian Institute, Albany, New York.
In 1970, Brother Cajetan became the religious Superior of the Holy Cross Brothers in West Haven, Conn., and in 1973 he was appointed Director of Saint Joseph’s Spiritual Life Center, Valatie, N.Y.
In 1975, Fr. Holland, entered Pope John XXIII Seminary for delayed vocations in Weston, Mass., to begin studies for the priesthood.During his studies at John XXIII, he worked as a part-time chaplain at Bon Secours Hospital, Methuen, Mass., and at Danvers Mental Hospital, Danvers, Mass. He had also spent summers working at Holy Cross Parish, South Easton, Mass., and Most Holy Trinity Parish in Saco, Maine.
As a Deacon, Fr. Holland spent his year working as a Chaplain at Saint Raphael’s Hospital, New Haven, Conn., and assisting at Saint Martin De Porres Parish. Following his Ordination, he spent many years serving as hospital chaplain and assisting at parishes in Connecticut and Vermont, until 1993 when he moved to Christopher Lodge, Cocoa Beach, Fla. In 2007, Fr. Holland moved to Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, Ind.
Fr. Holland is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Annie Holland, and his brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Clara Holland. He is survived by his brother Jerome (Mariette) Holland, 12 nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
Viewing and a wake service for Fr. Holland were held in the Chapel of Moreau Seminary, University of Notre Dame, on Tuesday, April 17, 2012. The funeral Mass was celebrated at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart Basilica, Notre Dame, Ind., on Wednesday, April 18.
