NOTRE DAME, Ind. Rev. Edwin J. Kadzielawski, C.S.C., 94, died on Wednesday, April 27, 2016, at Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, Ind.

Fr. Kadzielawski was born on Jan. 22, 1922, in Chicago to Stanislaus and Bernice (Grabowski) Kadzielawski. He graduated in 1940 from Holy Trinity High School, Chicago. He was received into the Congregation of Holy Cross on Aug. 15, 1941. He made his First Profession on Aug. 16, 1942. Fr. Kadzielawski graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy in 1945. He made his Final Profession on Aug. 16, 1945; and was Ordained into the priesthood on June 8, 1949. Fr. Kadzielawski received a theology degree from Holy Cross College in 1949. He pursued graduate studies at Loyola University of Chicago, receiving a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology in 1966. He did additional graduate work in psychology at both the University of Minnesota and St. John’s College, Collegeville, Minn.

Fr. Kadzielawski assisted at Sacred Heart Church and taught at the high school in New Orleans from 1949 to 1953. He was Chaplain and Teacher at St. Edwards High School in Lakewood, Ohio, for one year, until he was assigned to St. Hedwig Parish, South Bend, Ind., where he assisted from 1954 to 1956. Fr. Kadzielawski assisted at Holy Trinity Church in Chicago, from 1956 to 1962, when he became the Confessor at the Sacred Heart Novitiate in Jordan, Minn., where he also pursued continuing studies in testing and management. From 1963 to 1969, Fr. Kadzielawski was Chaplain to the Brothers at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas, where he also taught psychology and was the Director of Testing and Guidance. Fr. Kadzielawski served as a Provincial Counselor from 1968 to 1976. From 1969 to 1972, he served as Director of the Holy Cross Fathers House of Studies. He worked in counseling at De La Salle High School in New Orleans from 1972 to 1977, and lived at the Reynold’s Institute. From 1976 to 1980, Fr. Kadzielawski served as Assistant Provincial and Director of Formation in the former Southern Province of the United States. He served as Associate Pastor of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Austin from 1977 to 1978; Pastor of St. Jude’s in Baton Rouge, La., from 1978 to 1984; Associate Pastor of Sacred Heart Church in New Orleans from 1984 to 1985; and Pastor of St. John’s Church, Marble Falls, Texas, from 1985 to 2000. From 1988 to 1998, Fr. Kadzielawski was Dean of Western Austin Deanery. In 2000, he became Associate Pastor of Dolores Parish, Austin, while he lived at the Steiner Lodge. He moved to Holy Cross House in 2007.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Stanislaus and Bernice Kadzielawski, and his brothers, Jerome (Gladys) and Edmund.

He is survived by his brother Leonard (Dorothy), his nephews and niece, Robert, Janice (Jerome) Blanford, Ronald (Elke) and Thomas (Tarah), and many great and great-great nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday (May 1, 2016) at Moreau Seminary, where there will be a Wake Service at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday (May 2, 2016) at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at Notre Dame. Burial will be in the community cemetery at Notre Dame. Kaniewski Funeral Home, South Bend, is in charge of the arrangements.
