On Tuesday, Stonehill College, which was founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1948 in Easton, MA, launched the first annual Saint André Lecture in honor of the first saint of Holy Cross. The inaugural lecture was given by Nicholas Kristof, an op-ed columnist for the New York Times and two-time Pulitizer Prize winner. His lecture was entitled “Welcoming the Other.”
Kristof is widely known for bringing to light human rights abuses in Asia and Africa, such as human trafficking and the Darfur conflict. He has lived on four continents, reported on six, and traveled to 150 countries and all 50 US states. The Archbishop of Cape Town, South Africa, Desmond Tutu has described Kristof as an “honorary African” for his courage in shining a spotlight on the conflicts.
Saint André Bessette, a Holy Cross brother from Canada, was canonized by Pope Benedict XIV on October 17, 2010, in Rome.
