Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas spoke Sept. 19 at the University of Portland to return a favor to Rev. E. William Beauchamp, C.S.C., president of the University.
In 2011, Justice Thomas asked Fr. Beauchamp to help out a young, homeless woman who dreamed of attending UP’s nursing program by covering some of her tuition. In return, Thomas promised he’d come to UP one day. The young woman was in attendance.
About 1,200 people attended his talk, which included a question-and-answer session, jokes and life stories. The event was led by two political science professors. The annual Red Mass followed Justice Thomas’ talk.
