Wouldn’t it be wonderful, if we could always expect forgiveness, no matter what we’ve done or how much time has passed? Well, our faith tells us that we can. One of the wonderful joys of being a priest, particularly during the Season of Lent, is that I am able to impart the loving forgiveness of God through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I know in my own life how wonderful it is to hear: “I absolve you from your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” That kind of forgiveness always leads me more deeply into the love of Christ, who is willing to suffer and die for us, not because we are perfect, but because we are still sinners. God already knows our sins. When we are sorry, He’s just waiting to share his forgiveness with us. It’s like hearing my mother laugh over a broken table.
