The devoted service of Rev. William Corby, C.S.C.; Rev. James Dillon, C.S.C.; Rev. Paul Gillen, C.S.C., and other Holy Cross priests to provide spiritual respite to soldiers during the Civil War was detailed in “Echoes: Gettysburg, 1863” in the Summer 2013 issue of Notre Dame Magazine. University of Notre Dame President Rev. Edward Sorin, C.S.C., released seven Holy Cross priests from their positions at the University to serve in the war as chaplains. The article written by John Nagy gives the backstory of Fr. Corby’s famous absolution of the troops on July 2, 1863.
