France is the birthplace of the Congregation of Holy Cross. Blessed Basile Moreau founded Holy Cross on March 1, 1837.
The first mission of the Congregation of Holy Cross outside of France was in Algeria in Africa (1840). That mission was closed in 1873, yet in 1957 the Congregation returned to the continent when three brothers from the United States arrived in December to Ghana.
In 1944, the Congregation of Holy Cross sent religious from French Canada to Haiti to begin a new mission.
In 1851, at the request of Propaganda Fide, the Vatican Congregation for Church’s missionary work, Moreau accepted responsibility for this mission territory.
