UP to Highlight History of Catholic Education in America

University of Portland will host a conference, “The Impact of Catholic Education in America: Past, Present, and Future,” June 20-22, on campus.

The conference is sponsored by the University’s Garaventa Center for Catholic Intellectual Life and American Culture.

The conference will highlight the history of Catholic education in America and the conditions, programs, and circumstances that have allowed Catholic schools to flourish across the nation.

The conference will begin on Thursday, June 20, with an opening Mass, a welcome reception, and a keynote address by Thomas Groome from the Department of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry at Boston College.Groome’s books include “What Makes Us Catholic,Will There Be Faith?”and “Educating for Life.” His keynote address is free and open to the public, with no registration required, and will begin at 7 p.m. June 20 in Buckley Center Auditorium. The conference will continue with concurrent sessions on Friday and Saturday.
