We must be men with hope to bring. —Constitutions of the Congregation of Holy Cross, 8:118
When Blessed Basil Moreau founded the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1837, he brought together priests and brothers to be “educators in the faith,” who with a preferential option for the poor would educate both the mind and the heart. In this way, members of Holy Cross are “educators in the faith” and “men with hope to bring.” Watch a video of Moreau’s life below. Our “great band of men” include one of Moreau’s first priests, Rev. Edward Sorin, C.S.C., who founded the University of Notre Dame; famed Civil War chaplain and Notre Dame President Rev. William Corby, C.S.C.; confidant to U.S. Presidents, civil rights leader and Notre Dame President Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, C.S.C.; Servant of God Patrick Peyton, founder of Holy Cross Family Ministries; and our first saint, Br. André Bessette, C.S.C. Along with our founder Blessed Basil Moreau, there are other members of Holy Cross that are are candidates for sainthood:
- Servant of God Theotonius Ganguly
- Servant of God Patrick Peyton
- Servant of God Vincent J. McCauley
- Servant of God Flavian Laplante
