Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, C.S.C., a.k.a. “Father Ted,” always made it clear that what was most important to him was being a Holy Cross priest. That was how he identified himself, and everything he was able to accomplish flowed from that fact. It was always the starting point and he lived his priesthood in simple, yet powerful ways. While he advised popes and presidents he lived in a simple room at Corby Hall.
In honor of Fr. Ted, Jay and Mary Flaherty have graciously presented the Congregation of Holy Cross, United States Province of Priests and Brothers, with a tremendous opportunity. Jay and Mary have pledged a $500,000 matching gift challenge to establish the Tribute to Father Ted – A Fund for the Future of Holy Cross.
Your gift, which will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Flaherty’s, not only honors Fr. Ted but will be instrumental in our ability to continue to form and educate Holy Cross priests and brothers here in the United States and throughout our international formation programs.

Today, more than 50 seminarians in the United States and over 100 internationally are undertaking a formation program similar to Fr. Ted’s – one that’s rich in pastoral experiences and spiritual development, and is rooted in our Holy Cross and Catholic tradition. In addition, 14 men are studying for advanced degrees so that they can continue Fr. Ted’s legacy of teaching and perhaps someday lead one of our four Holy Cross colleges or universities.
Annually, the United States Province invests more than $2 million for formation and education. We’re blessed to have an endowment that assists us in providing for the education and formation needs of the growing number of young men in our community. However, since our endowment doesn’t fully cover these expenses, there is also a growing need to find additional funds. The Tribute to Father Ted fund, once the match is completed, will infuse much needed dollars to bolster our endowment for education and formation and reduce the gap between our earnings and expense.
