U.S. Province Leadership

The General Administration for the Congregation of Holy Cross is located in Rome, Italy, and also the place of residence of the Superior General and his Council. The Superior General is Br. Paul Bednarczyk, C.S.C.

The organizational framework of Congregation of Holy Cross is structured as follows:

  • The Generalate (Superior General and Council, General Administration)
  • Vicariates (Vicariate Superior and Council) dependent on the Generalate
  • The Provinces (Provincial Superior and Council, Provincial Administration)
  • Districts (District Superior and Council) dependent on a Province
  • The Local Religious Communities, Residences and Apostolic Works under the jurisdiction of the Provinces, Vicariates or Districts.

The United States Province of Priests and Brothers is headquartered in Notre Dame, Indiana.

Fr. Pete Jarret, C.S.C.

Rev. Peter A. Jarret, C.S.C.

Assistant Provincial & Vicar

Fr. Pete Jarret, C.S.C., was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Government & International Studies from the University of Notre Dame in 1986, followed by a Master of Divinity degree in 1991. He professed Final Vows in the Congregation of Holy Cross on August 31, 1991, and was ordained a priest on April 25, 1992. Following his ordination, Fr. Pete served as Parochial Vicar at Christ the King Catholic Church in South Bend, Indiana, until 1995, when he was named Pastor of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Granger, Indiana. From 2001 to 2006, he served as Rector of Keough Hall at Notre Dame and also as Associate Rector of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart (2002-2003) and Counselor to the President (2003-2005). Since 1998, he has taught in the Graduate School of Theology at Notre Dame and in 2006 was named Religious Superior for the Holy Cross priests and brothers at Notre Dame. During his tenure as Religious Superior, Fr. Pete served on the Board of Trustees for the University of Notre Dame and was named a Fellow of the University. From 2010 to 2016, Fr. Pete was superior and rector of Moreau Seminary.

Rev. William M. Lies, C.S.C.

Provincial Superior

Fr. Bill Lies, C.S.C., was born in Little Falls, Minnesota. He received his bachelor’s in English with minors in French and Philosophy from Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, followed by a M.Th. from the University of Notre Dame in 1993 and a Ph.D. in Latin American Politics from the University of Pittsburgh. He professed Final Vows in the Congregation of Holy Cross on August 28, 1993, and was ordained to the priesthood on April 9, 1994. Before becoming Provincial Superior, Fr. Bill was Vice President for Mission Engagement and Church Affairs at the University of Notre Dame, a role he began in March of 2012. He formerly served as executive director of the Center for Social Concerns at Notre Dame (2002-2012) and taught in the Department of Political Science. In 2013, Fr. Bill received Catholic Charities U.S.A.’s “Keep the Dream Alive” award, which honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He is a fellow of both the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies and the Kellogg Institute for International Studies.

Fr. Bill Beauchamp, C.S.C.

Assistant Provincial, Secretary, & Steward

Fr. Bill Beauchamp, C.S.C., earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Detroit, as well as a J.D. from the University of Notre Dame. Prior to entering Holy Cross in 1977, Fr. Beauchamp practiced law in Michigan and taught at Alma College. He received his Master of Divinity degree from Notre Dame in 1981 and was ordained a priest in 1982. At this time, he also served as Executive Assistant both to Notre Dame President, Fr. Ted Hesburgh, C.S.C., and to Executive Vice President, Fr. Ned Joyce, C.S.C. He then himself became Executive Vice President of Notre Dame from 1987 to 2000. He is the President Emeritus of the University of Portland, where he ministered from 2003 to 2014, and he has since held roles as Assistant Provincial and Steward of the United States Province of Priests and Brothers (2014-2018) and as Special Assistant to the Provincial Administration (2018-2021). Fr. Beauchamp is on the board of directors of a number of institutions, including the University of Notre Dame, the University of Portland, Stonehill College, Saint Joseph Health System, and Holy Cross Family Ministries.
