Baraka Bouts to Raise Money for Holy Cross Schools in Uganda

ND student Anna Dwyer ('11) challenges herself in the Ugandan heat

The Notre Dame Women’s boxing club is raising money for the work of Holy Cross in East Africa through the Holy Cross Mission Center.

The 11th annual Baraka Bouts begins at 6 p.m. Monday (Nov. 11) in the Joyce Center Fieldhouse with semifinal action. Winners go to the finals, which begin at 7 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 14). The cost of tickets is $10 for both nights. Tickets are available online at the Notre Dame Athletics site.

Women’s boxing and the Baraka Bouts support Lakeview Senior Secondary School in Jinja, Uganda, and St. Joseph Hill Secondary School in Kyambogo, Uganda. Both are Holy Cross-run schools which serve impoverished students in the U.S. Province District of East Africa.

Each boxer also raises more than $350 through ads and pledges throughout the season and they participate in a traditional fundraiser, the Power Hour. For seven hours on Oct. 12, 2013, the team did push-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks and all special requests, collecting donations from students, alumni, faculty and friends. Last year, the club raised almost $1,700 through Power Hour.

Several Notre Dame women boxers have had the chance to visit Uganda, study abroad there and actively serve the missions they box for.

You can give directly online to Baraka Bouts on the Notre Dame Women’s Boxing website, or to the Holy Cross Mission Center (please designate your contribution for Baraka Bouts).

The ND Men’s boxing club also supports the work of Holy Cross in Bangladesh through the annual Bengal Bouts, which takes place in late February and early March.
