Br. James H. Miller, C.S.C., 85, died Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, Indiana.

Br. James Henry Miller, C.S.C. was born on March 3, 1938, in Baltimore, Maryland, to James and Ruth (Vahle) Miller. In 1959, Br. Miller boarded a train from Baltimore heading to North Easton, Massachusetts, to enter the Congregation of Holy Cross, in the (then) Eastern Province. In August 1959, he joined 32 others in Bennington, Vermont, for his Novitiate Year. On August 16, 1961, he made his First Profession in Holy Cross, and on August 16, 1964, he professed Final Vows.

From 1964 to 1966, he served as director of Vocations for the Brothers at Holy Cross Seminary, North Easton, Massachusetts. He also spent seven summers in Sebago, Maine, at Camp Sebaik, where he managed the business office. From 1966 to 1968, he served in Rome at the Collegio di Sancta Croce and the Holy Cross Generalate in various capacities. He then returned to North Easton to work at Holy Cross Center from 1968 to 1969, followed by a return to Bennington for another year on the Novitiate staff. In 1970, Br. Miller was assigned to King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to work on a bachelor’s degree in theatre. He was a counselor in a couple of residence halls, spent time as director of a residence hall, and was also orientation director for a few years. Upon receiving his degree, he stayed and worked in the theatre department, and in one of those years, was assistant to the Dean of Student Affairs.

In 1976, Br. Miller entered Temple University in Philadelphia as a graduate student working toward a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre, which he completed in 1979. In 1979,
he began working at King’s College, teaching in the Department of Theatre and Speech, and in 1998 he became the director of Theatre Arts at King’s College, a position he held until 2016 when he moved to Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, Indiana.

Preceding him in death are his parents, James and Ruth Miller, and brothers, Msgr. Edward Miller and Br. Thomas Miller, F.S.C.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel of Mary on the campus of Stonehill College in North Easton, Mass., on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, with the
Funeral Mass following at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at the Holy Cross Community Cemetery at Stonehill College. Kane Funeral Home of Easton, Massachusetts, is in charge of the arrangements.
