“We pronounce our vows in a moment, but living them for the sake of the kingdom is the work of a lifetime” (Constitution 6:57).
Our Constitutions in the Congregation of Holy Cross remind us that we are never finished products. Even after completing our time as postulants, novices and spending four years in temporary vows, we still need to cultivate the skills, virtues, and dispositions that make us better disciples of Christ, better community members and better ministers.
With this lifelong journey in mind, Holy Cross religious who have been in final vows for five years or less gather annually for the Early Years Workshop. This year, we benefited greatly from the insights of our Provincial Administration and Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.
Bishop Rhoades spoke about the ongoing need to grow in holiness after final vows, while our Provincial Administration provided updates on the province’s state of affairs and shared some practicalities about our common life and ministry.
Beyond the presentations, the workshop offered plenty of time for all of us — whether we are assigned to parishes, high schools, colleges, higher studies or vocation’s work — to reconnect with the Lord and with one another. Our days were anchored by Mass, Adoration, and the Liturgy of the Hours, common meals and unstructured time for much-needed rest and relaxation.
We departed the workshop refreshed, rejuvenated, and excited to see where God would lead us next.
