Rev. Edward C. Krause, C.S.C. | September 11, 1940 – October 6, 2026

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Rev. Edward Charles Krause, C.S.C., 86, died at Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, Ind., on October 6, 2026. He was the son of legendary Edward “Moose” Krause, who served as the University of Notre Dame’s Athletic Director for 32 years.

Fr. Krause was born in Worcester, Mass., on September 11, 1940, the oldest of three children of Edward and Elizabeth (Linden) Krause. After graduating from St. Joseph High School in South Bend, Ind., in 1958, he enrolled at the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Ind., and on August 15, 1959, he entered the Sacred Heart Novitiate in Jordan, Minn. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame in Philosophy in 1963. He made First Vows in Holy Cross on August 16, 1960, and professed Final Vows on August 16, 1963. After graduating in 1963, he did graduate work at the Gregorian University in Rome, where in 1967, he earned his Licentiate of Sacred Theology. He was ordained a Holy Cross priest on December 17, 1966, in Italy.

After ordination in 1966, he served as assistant pastor at St. Joseph Parish in South Bend, Ind., for three years. In 1975, he completed his doctorate in Christian Social Ethics at Boston University. From 1975-1980, he served in campus ministry at St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Ind., before teaching at Gannon University in Erie, Pa., from 1980-2013. During his time at Gannon, he also served at St. Andrew Parish (Erie, Pa.), Immaculate Conception Church (Erie, Pa.), as editor of the Social Justice Review, served as chaplain for the Society of Catholic Social Scientists, and appeared in numerous programs on EWTN, the Catholic media network. He published various articles in Social Justice Review, Crisis, First Things, Faith and Reason, the New Oxford Review, and the National Catholic Register, for which he served as contributing editor for many years. In 2013, he moved to Holy Cross House in Notre Dame, Ind., where he lived until his passing.

Preceding Fr. Krause in death are his parents and sister Mary Carrigan. He is survived by his brother, Philip (Karen) and beloved nephews.

A Wake Service will be held on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. ET at Moreau Seminary and Scholasticate, Notre Dame, Ind. Burial will be in the community cemetery at Notre Dame. Kaniewski Funeral Home, South Bend, is in charge of the arrangements.
