St. Joseph’s Hill Secondary School in Uganda, Africa, gathers approximately 600 students, faculty, and staff each school day. Founded in 1990 by the Congregation of Holy Cross, the school primarily serves low-income students from the surrounding neighborhoods. Since its inception, the school has continuously improved the quality of education it provides and the facilities it uses, including adding both boys’ and girls’ dormitories so that some students can board on campus. The most recent improvement, however, was an urgent need: increasing the school security.
Some security concerns in the last few years and a new security requirement from the Ugandan government led school leadership to seek funding from the Holy Cross Mission Center (HCMC) to purchase and install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras. After receiving funding, the cameras were installed promptly. They record on a 24-hour-basis and store recordings for three months.
Kyomugisha Medius, who has served as a security guard for the school since 2016, told the HCMC, “Now with the cameras in place and covering all corners of the school, we are able to monitor and receive alerts when things are not moving on right and respond rapidly.”
Both Medius and Brother Kaganda Joseph, C.S.C., the St. Joseph’s Hill Secondary School Head Teacher, expressed gratitude for the cameras. Br. Kaganda wrote, “This project of installing cameras is one of the many blessings that we have received this year through the generosity of the Holy Cross Mission Center … The helping hand of the HCMC over the years has enabled me to dedicate my service to this school wholeheartedly knowing that I am NOT alone. There are always generous people that are always ready to help out.”
