When You Feel Like You Don’t Belong

As a Rector at Notre Dame, the number of students I encounter who self-identify as victims of imposter syndrome seem to be increasing. They think that they don’t really belong at Notre Dame because they don’t have straight A’s, aren’t into football weekend culture, or don’t fit into some pre-cast mold of what a Domer should be.

But imposter syndrome is an ongoing battle for Christians too. How do we project and witness to our faith without coming off as hypocritical holier-than-thous? Three suggestions.

First, practice gratitude. Take a mental inventory of every single thing you have going for you. Keep it in mind and try to operate out of that rather than becoming preoccupied with worries about what you’re not or what you don’t have.

Second, replace every moment spent fretting about how you’re not measuring up as a disciple of Jesus with some small act of kindness toward someone. They’ll feel better and so will you.

Third, if you haven’t been lately, go to Confession. Be reminded that the Sacraments are made for sinners to remind us that God loves all of us — mini versions of the Prodigal Son — no matter how we might wish we could be some other version of who we actually are.

In short, practice gratitude, lead with love, and turn to the Sacraments for grace and healing. Take courage and trust in the Lord’s love and mercy!
