On Thursday, May 8, the General Administration of the Congregation of Holy Cross hosted the first of a series of webinars throughout the Year of Mission. The presentation by Br. Joel Giallanza, C.S.C., was titled “Continuing the Mission, Hastening the Kingdom – Basile Moreau’s Perspective on Mission” offered all virtual attendees the opportunity to learn what Holy Cross founder Blessed Basil Moreau wrote about Mission.

Among the many valuable insights Br. Joel offered were the following:

• Moreau’s sense of mission was rooted in the personal holiness and pastoral presence of the individual CSC.
• Moreau is the only writer that Br. Joel has come across who spoke of education as a “work of resurrection.”
• During Moreau’s time, a report produced for the Vatican by a priest who was not a member of HOly Cross spoke highly of Holy Cross’s collaborative efforts to make present the Kingdom of God.
• Even during a period when Moreau was ostracized from members of the Congregation, his writings never showed signs of a loss of zeal or hope.
• Br. Joel recommends Blessed Basil Moreau’s Circular Letter 14 for all those who are looking to learn more about his vision for the Congregation of Holy Cross.

Providentially, this event was held on the same day as the College of Cardinals elected Pope Leo XIV to lead the Church. As Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A., the future Pope Leo XIV said in 2023:  “I still consider myself a missionary. My vocation, like that of every Christian, is to be a missionary, to proclaim the Gospel wherever one is.” Br. Joel, Blessed Moreau, and Pope Leo XIV—three men of mission for whom we give thanks today!
