The Catholic community of Bangladesh came together in solemn reverence on September 2nd, 2025 to mark the 48th death anniversary of Servant of God Archbishop Theotonius Amal Ganguly, C.S.C. The event was held at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Ramna, Dhaka, his final resting place and a sacred site of devotion for the faithful.
Each year on September 2nd, Masses are held at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Dhaka, where the faithful gather to pray for his sainthood. The 48th death anniversary celebration of Archbishop Theotonius Amal Ganguly at St. Mary’s Cathedral stands as a powerful testament to his enduring impact. Marked by solemn liturgy, community gathering, reflection on his sanctity, and renewed prayer for his canonization, it brings together the faithful in honoring a beloved Church leader whose virtues transcend time.
The highlight of the day was a Solemn Memorial Mass celebrated by Archbishop Bejoy N. D’Cruze, OMI; alongside Cardinal Patrick D’Rozario, C.S.C.; bishops, priests, religious, and a large number of faithful from across the country. The homily was preached by Most Rev. Theotonious Gomes, C.S.C., and reflected on the life of holiness, humility, and service that marked Archbishop Ganguly’s journey. Bishop Gomes mentioned his simplicity, spiritual discipline, and dedication to education and peace-building continue to inspire us all, urging us to pray earnestly for his canonization.
A short commemorative program was held where Fr. David Gomes, C.S.C. shared personal reflections and testimonies on Archbishop Ganguli’s legacy. Fr. Gomes emphasized his contributions to education, interfaith harmony, and leadership during Bangladesh’s struggle for independence.
A brief documentary on his life was screened, and copies of the book based on his life and works by Fr. Adam S. Pereira, C.S.C, Dibaloker Ujjal Nakktra: Theotonious Amal Ganguly, C.S.C., which means, “Theotonious Amal Ganguly, C.S.C.: The Bright Day Star,” were distributed to attendees. Fr. George K. Rozario, C.S.C., Provincial of Sacred Heart of Jesus Province, Bangladesh, extended his thanks to everyone who participated in this occasion and shared his glorious works for the people of Bangladesh.
Following the Eucharistic celebration, clergy and lay faithful processed to the grave of Archbishop Ganguly within the cathedral grounds. Special prayer for the canonization of Archbishop Ganguly, led by the Vicar General of Dhaka Archdiocese, Bishop Subrato B. Gomes. The faithful were invited to continue praying for a miracle through his intercession, a crucial step in the process toward sainthood. Wreaths were laid, candles lit, and prayers offered for the repose of his soul and the advancement of his canonization process. The atmosphere was filled with devotion, hope, and deep respect.
