With HCMC’s Matching Grant, Lenten Fundraiser at King’s College Raises $3900 for St. Joseph’s Hill
As the 2024-25 academic year drew to a close, the King’s College community in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, celebrated not only its graduates but also its commitment to global solidarity through its flourishing Twinning partnership with St. Joseph’s Hill Secondary School in Kyarusozi, Uganda.
Spearheaded by the Economics & International Business Club and supported by Campus Ministry, King’s College held its annual Lenten Coins for a Cause almsgiving campaign with inspiring results. Students, faculty, and staff came together in a spirit of Christian charity (or “caritas,” as our new Augustinian pope would say), raising $1,985.27 to support the educational needs at their partner school.
The funds will provide new student desks to encourage group learning as well as much-needed restroom facilities for the boys at St. Joseph’s Hill, improving both hygiene and privacy for the broader school community. These tangible improvements are a testament to how even small acts—spare change collected in cups, baked goods sold at campus fundraisers—can collectively make a profound difference.
The King’s effort culminated in a two-day bake sale on April 10 and 11, where volunteers baked, bought, and sold homemade treats as part of the campus-wide fundraising push. Special thanks go to Dr. Margarita Rose, club moderator of the Economics & International Business Club; Rev. Brogan Ryan, C.S.C.; and Becky Matus in Campus Ministry for their leadership in directing and promoting this year’s campaign.
This Twinning partnership between King’s College and St. Joseph’s Hill continues to grow. Beyond financial support, the relationship is deepened by mutual prayer, encounter opportunities, and a commitment to building bridges across borders.
Thanks to the hard work of the Economics & International Business Club, their fundraising efforts qualify for this year’s $2,000 Bricklayers Matching Grant. As a result, their $1985.27 will be matched by the Holy Cross Mission Center’s donor funds before being disbursed to St. Joseph’s Hill. We pray that the total $3970.54 that St. Joseph’s Hill receives this year might allow their community to better share in Christ’s life in the years to come.
