Awareness Through Immersion: Holy Cross Grade School Visits La Luz Parish

On September 12, 2024, a small group of teachers and leaders from Holy Cross School and Parish in South Bend, Indiana, including Deacon Noah Junge, C.S.C., embarked upon a five-day immersion trip to Monterrey, Mexico.  This immersion experience fostered a better understanding and appreciation of the cultural differences encountered regularly at our Holy Cross School. It also allows participants to experience, firsthand, the beauty of Christ’s universal Church. Their enlightenment informs their cultural perceptions, their approach to their work, coworkers, and students.

Since 2022, this annual “Awareness Through Immersion” experience has been made possible by the generosity of the Apostolic, Justice & Peace Fund, Congregation of Holy Cross United States Province, and the hospitality of members of fellow CSC parish Nuestra Madre Santísima de la Luz in Guadalupe, Nuevo León.  Though the daily itinerary may change slightly from year-to-year, the reason for the trip remains the same: to strengthen cultural awareness and appreciation through an authentic immersion experience.  Travelers from Holy Cross School and Parish in South Bend, Indiana, spend their days side-by-side with lay and religious members of La Luz Parish, eating, drinking, laughing, exploring, learning, and praying together.

Principal Annie Borjas has a blog to show the activities and the participants immersed in the culture in Mexico. We invite you to share in the immersion experience through Annie’s eyes. Her photos and documentation concisely summarize the activities, and outline the highlights, with clarity beyond any second-person narrative.
